Most of our Amber campaigns have started off at some large social function. Balls, celebrations, funerals. We joke that anytime a bunch of Amberites get together, a campaign starts, and it's a wonder that anyone accepts party invitations.

This typically evolves into, “There is this great and terrible threat to all of existence, stemming from some previously unknown aspect of history and/or cosmology.”

Another one that I've seen a few times is, “You stayed behind with Gerard during the Patternfall, and everything goes pear-shaped.”

(Usually X = Chaos. Sometimes X = Eric or X = Flora. This includes the popular story in which we encounter the unstoppable alien hoardes of Chaos, against whom there is absolutely no hope.)

Save Amber from an alternate Power (Faerie, Tir na Nog’th, etc.)
Something wonky about the Hall of Mirrors (It doesn’t matter what. The point is that no one is equipped to handle it because it’s so weird. Wackiness ensues.)
