log 109
I was there with the Eyeless Crocodile when we rushed the demons.
I was there when we walked away.

Before, when my brother was one of the Chosen Best, who on their honor guarded the Kingspur through sleepless nights, I was only a shadow of my finer brother. I saw my brother's corpse returned to family. I saw his head separated from his fine body. I saw the cut and knew it for a hand I could find.

Later, they said it was the Croc took them all.

I could not believe then, that so small a Crocodile could behead a man bigger than I. Now there is no question. The Kingspur fell to the Croc. All the Chosen Best fell to the Croc. I was told and did not believe.

Even so, I was one who got lessons from the Croc. I was good. The Croc made me better. Perhaps even better than my brother. We trained every day with the Croc. I slept as little as possible, and used the extract to keep me going. My brain hurt with the learning and training.

But the Croc slept less than I. He talked to a wind called Marcus. He had sex with a wind called Keph. He is mad. He is a killer of a fine kind.

He killed my king and my brother. I will be there when he dies.

I love to lay in the grass after all have turned in and listen to the Croc weep before he sleeps. I only wish I knew the why. In front of us he laughs. He trains more of us every day. I want to know the secret of his weeping before I kill him.

Sometimes, he falls in the training. Every one of us leans towards him then, to see if he will die by a spur blade taking him in the moment of his error. It doesn't happen. I do not know what protects him. Every attempt to kill him fails.

I will be there when he dies.

I have sworn.

I was there with the Eyeless Crocodile when we rushed the demons. I was there when we walked away. The battle is hard to remember. The demons had numbers. It was all wrong. A bad battle it was, and we were knowing it was wrong even as the Croc led us into it.

The demons still fought if you took off an arm. The pale-faced black troops were worse than the demons for speed, but it was the demon numbers that would have won the fight. But we walked out. They lost.

The cavalry saved us; coming in from the sides: two forces. The black troops and the demons were crushed up like bird bones between them. We were between them too.

But we walked out.

I was there when the Croc laughed and called us 'flowers' and made us fight for every bloody inch.

Now tonight with the battle over we will camp. Everyone is tired down to their blood. We live and we rest tonight. Even the Croc will rest.

And he will answer my questions about his tears.
Then I will kill him.

where my knights will stand
Here with blooded bark
The sun's pyre my throne
Take my message to the Green Queen

If the question you're asking is "What is Martin up to?"

The answers are probably what you think they are, because you always were a step ahead. That's not going to be enough this time.

Ask Grandfather: the problem with being king is that sometimes something bigger than you ends up consuming you.

Ask Dad: the problem with being king is that sometimes your luck runs out.

Ask Merlin: The problem with being king is that sometimes all your magic and technology and power isn't enough.

I don't have to.

I don't have to kill you. You're walking dead already. The only question is how well you're going to die and what it will take to fix things afterwards. But you're not going to be around to worry about that last part.

Luke,

I thought long and hard about how to respond to your message. You know what was on my mind the whole time? How lonely the Unicorn must be. Are there no more of her kind, only the illegitimate partial breeds of her dalliance with a wizard (if the rumours are true)?

Do you want me to forgive you? Fine.

I forgive you.

Does it change anything? Not for me. I am beyond wanting to know why. I am even beyond wanting to hold you up by the throat and executing you personally. You have rid us of chaff from the family tree. You have rid us of our complacency. Safety was just an innocent bystander, another victim.

I can forgive you because it costs me nothing. I don't have any of that coinage left to pay.

What does it cost you? Why did you pay? Is it the bargain you wanted?

My knife has been dipped in blood for Amber, for Chaos, for Family...again and again. You don't wear a knife and expect it to stay clean, right? That's one of my rules of life.

Conducted by means of magical messages, a technique known only to the redheads and their allies

Dara: We shouldn't have won.

Bleys: No. Even with the reserves Lalage and I scrounged up, we should have lost. We were aided by the fact that Rinaldo didn't bring all his power to bear, and we did. We won't be able to do this again.

Dara: You saw what she did to Gilva.

Bleys: And you saw what Gilva did to her.

Dara: That's not all.

Bleys: I saw the other, too. Are you going to tell Martin?

Dara: I don't know what to tell him. What do you think?

Bleys: I think he won't hear it from me.

Bleys: I think you're right.

I have not heard back from you
or I broke this thing
or you didn't bargain on my last emotional confession

I might even owe you an apology

It occurs to me now in a very down moment
that someone
like Ana perhaps? Seda?
should tell Carmella I wasn't trying to kill her

and don't plan to
ever

on the other blade
killing strangers is not as satisfying
But it needs to be done
I want my eye back.

I'm going to war.
