The 20' By 20' Room: Keeping Players Involved

I'm interested in hearing what other players and game design professionals think about in terms of how to keep players involved in a game system. Is this an important goal in game design? If it is, how do you hook players and keep them hooked? If it's not, why not? As a player, what hooks you and keeps you hooked?
