Game Dream 22 :: oh, heavens
Game Dream 22: Heavenly Pantheon
Many RPGs deal, either directly or obliquely, with heavenly powers. Like politics, this subject can be a hot button for many people. When dealing with in-game heavenly powers, have you ever been made uncomfortable by a campaign / story? Has the creator of the campaign ever come to close to, or incorporated too much of historically accurate religion for your taste? If so, how did you deal with it?
Each game campaign I've ever designed to run has had 'fictional'
Powers That Be. Seldom have they even borrowed from Earth myth and literature, except in Amber, where Earth myth and literature borrow from the Eternal City.
Which isn't to say that Powers That Be can't be very disturbing.
Even a little faith can be a scary thing.
It didn't take fundamental Moslems to first teach me the above. The history of witch-burners did that. So when I get around an RPG experience where 'divine truth' is part of the plot—I always get a bit nervous.
To me, part of the fun of an immersive book, movie, or RPG, is that I might change things. If religion defines every truth, then I can't discuss or propose interpretations and changes.
Even a tyrant might change his mind or reflect.
Many gods can't change what they are.
So if you don't like it...
