WISH 90: System

Ginger asks: What do you think about system updates (Paranoia XP, Amber 2.0, DnD 3.0/3.5) and conversions (d20 Silver Age Sentinels, GURPS Traveller)? What about world/setting updates that result in system reboots (the end of the Age of Darkness)? Do you buy them, run them, or use them for resources? Why or why not?

System updates can depend greatly on what they update. I buy them in the hopes that they will improve the system. For example, White Wolf's World of Darkness updates were almost always a better version of the system. (The system was still horribly flawed but each version that I read seemed to improve on problems in the older versions.) I will certainly buy Amber 2.0 because, although it is one of my favorite games to play, it has a lot of problems that could be fixed.

Conversions are extremely cool, but will depend on the system being converted to. I had no interest in the d20 Call of Cthulu or any of the other d20 conversions out there. I don't think d20 is flexible enough to handle the various settings that have been attempted with it and a game of Call of Cthulu using D&D rules would completely change the feel of the game and not in a positive way. However, I bought all the GURPS World of Darkness books as they came out and was extremely happy with them. I like GURPS a lot, so of course I'd like to see one of my favorite systems get a conversion of one of my favorite settings. I'm certain many d20 fans thought the same way about d20 Call of Cthulu, despite my dislike for the idea.
