…I have a bad feeling about this.
The Force and Scene Advantages
In the canon, the Force allows Jedi to sense not just sudden threat in combat, but also events about to unfold. Opponent's plans can be guessed at and/or maneuvered.
"I have foreseen it. His compassion for you will be his
undoing. He will come to you and then you will bring him before me." —the Emperor
In our game, we will allow trained PC Force users to set up Scene Advantage with the GM. Scene Advantage is a request for a particular scene to move in a predicted direction.
Example:
OBI-WAN: "I need to get our happy crew away from the Death
Star by rigging those tractor beams. GM, can I setup a Scene Advantage here?"
GM: "Well, you can sense Darth nearby and he will sense you.
Other than that, I'd say go ahead. Give me specifics."
OBI-WAN: "I want to give Luke time to talk Solo into picking
up Leia. And I expect I'll have to cause a distraction to give them all a chance to blast off, and that's after I shut down the generators without triggering an alarm."
GM: "You can't steer other PC outcomes, but the Scene
Advantage will be yours for disabling the tractors and making a distraction. You will have to zig-zag about to confuse Darth as to exactly what you are doing."
OBI-WAN: "Understood. Well, this should be interesting."
P Cs will "talk to the universe (GM)" before they state/post in-character such feelings of impending events.
THREEPIO: The tractor beam is coupled to the main reactor in
seven locations. A power loss at one of the terminals will allow the ship to leave.
[Ben studies the data on the monitor readout.]
BEN: I don't think you boys can help. I must go alone.
Of course, P Cs should feel free to say at any time, "I have a bad feeling about this."
Scene Advantages can be blended together. Ranks in the Force will guide the GM to how the various requests for Scene Advantage should blend.
Example:
DARTH: "So I sense my old master here. I want to set up a
Scene Advantage where I best him."
GM: "You can't steer the outcome. Be more specific."
DARTH: "I'll use the Force to find a corridor he is most
likely to use to get back to the freighter in the dock bay. I'll position men to guard the alternate routes. Let's say the Scene Advantage is to make it as difficult as possible for him to avoid me."
GM: "OK, so noted." [checks his notes] "Let me get back to you."
The Scene Advantage between two Force users is a collaboration of intentions. No outcomes are warranted. Here the GM can decide that Ben's requested distraction and Darth's requested confrontation can be blended to the same event. A quick GM check with Ben gets an OK.
Darth then gets the OK from the GM for the Scene Advantage. Darth can now post/state a lead-in to the scene.
VADER: Obi-Wan is here. The Force is with him.
TARKIN: If you're right, he must not be allowed to escape.
VADER: Escape is not his plan. I must face him alone.
Note that nothing confirms Vader really understands Ben's plans even though he says he does. Jedi's often refer to destiny and path, but Players really need to make things happen "in the moment" and "on screen" unless no P Cs are involved and the GM rules the requested events trivial.
