At the time of Kalin's travels, the Chiss Ascendency was much more aware of Old Republic space than vice-versa. When Kalin went searching for teachings beyond those of her disgraces gun kata master, she realized she would have to travel into Old Republic space. Her own people's worlds provided too homogenous a culture, and the Ascendency's other near neighbors were hostile barbarians.
Stealing a one-man ship, she departed the Ascendency, collecting samples of Basic that she picked up in transmissions on the way so that she could teach herself the language. She first landed on a remote trade planet that she had selected for its high level of varied species contact, and began there her search for the greater Force she knew existed...
