Mari Surik

Mari Surik grew up on a frontier planet in the Outer Rim. As a child, her nascent empathy caused most people to mistrust her, or view her as strange, especially since she often responded to the true emotion she sensed, rather than what people said. And, of course, she sensed how they felt about her, which only made her feel more isolated. When the Jedi discovered her and took her to be trained, she was only too happy to leave.

The Jedi trained her in her healing ability, and tried to teach her control of her emotions. But this was easier said than done with a child who could sense the very emotions her instructors were denying they had. As a result, while she did her best to do as they instructed, there was a fallibility to them that other students didn't perceive. And this caused her to doubt that all of their teachings were correct.

This doubt came to the fore when at 17, she and another trainee, Ran Mozh, fell in love. In him she found the love that had been so lacking in her life, and she refused to believe that what they felt for each other could be wrong. Desperate not to be separated from each other, they decided to leave the Jedi order and seek out an organization Ran had heard of, who did not fear emotions. The Sith.

In order to make it harder for the Jedi to track them, they split up, hoping the Jedi would be searching for a couple. The plan was to meet up at a planet where Ran had been told they could make contact with the Sith. Ran never arrived. Heartbroken, Mari waited for weeks, until what little money she had was almost gone. Then she went in search of the Sith herself, hoping that Ran had missed her somehow, and would be waiting for her there. She found the Sith, but not Ran. Grieving and despondent, it wasn't hard for her to believe the Sith when they insinuated that the Jedi had hunted Ran down and killed him, especially when Jager Kuro Moyo revealed that he had once been one of those Jedi hunters. Vowing revenge against those who had stolen her only love away from her, she became Kuro Moyo's apprentice, and threw herself into her Sith training. All she has left of Ran is the locket he gave her, which she wears at all times.
