So I was at Confusion and I was telling the gentleman whose book keep me up late last night that the last time I'd picked up a book based solely on the cover was Kushiel's Dart. The cover art caught my admittedly-drawn-to-pretty-half-naked-women eye, and I picked it up. (I don't think I mentioned it was right next to Freedom and Necessity, which had been filed under Bull, which I went to buy and is why I saw it in the first place, funny enough).
I loved that book, and it would have taken me longer to find it if it hadn't been for the woman in a... sheet(?) on the cover.
So, no sooner am I back to work after the con than I find this book in the free book room:
Woman. Sheet. Mask. Knife. (Not very good picture, but I've still got homework to do tonight, so deal.)
I've read the first chapter of the book, and it doesn't really carry my rhythm, but it's interesting enough that I'll keep reading and eventually, I hope, catch the rhythm of the book. Then again, I'm not much of a critic - a book has to be just extremely awful for me to hate it. It's no Carey book, though. But it's got a spy, and it's a she.
The cover art suggests to me she isn't afraid to use her breasts to distract someone, but hey, it could just be misleading marketing. The copyright is from 2003, so I have to wonder if this is a reissue with a new cover?
Anyway, I saw a girl in a sheet and declared - TREND - and grabbed the book (it being in the free book room and all.)
"Yeah, I have that, the pages are bible thin, I think it might intimidate my 10 year old. Have you seen it?"
"Yup, it's big."
So it looks like I'll be buying them online somewhere, probably used. I promised her she'd have the books we got her name from for her 10th, and she'll have them, just perhaps a little late. (Although I do still have a bit over a week.)
Posted by Liz at February 10, 2005 8:06 PMWhen's her birthday? We're unpacking more books this weekend and I can go through and see if I've got a complete second set (I adopt Amber books so I can give them away). If I do, I will mail them to you. Remind me Saturday (we're picking up stuff from storage then).
That's the original cover for Confidence Game -- I've bought it and read it. I think there's a mini-review on it from last year on my website. Catch me when you're done and I'll talk more about my feelings on it...
