Read:
1) Hacking Gmail by Ben Hammersley (a little over my head in most places, but even the little things I picked up were worth it.)
2) The Courtesan by Julian Justiss (the first romance novel I've ever seen with a woman with a sword on the cover - sure it's not the first ever, but first for me.)
3) Growing Season: Life Lessons from the Garden by Arlene Bernstein (this one is going to Jenn.)
4) Prince of Danger by Amanda Scott
5) House Poor: Pumped-up Princes, Rising Rates, and Mortgages on Steroids by June Fletcher (while I think we'll be okay when the bubble bursts, the patterns and consequences intrigue me. The section on percent returns on remodels was especially helpful in making me understand I should not remodel unless I'm doing it for me.)
6) Lord John and The Private Matter by Diana Gabaldon. (Thanks to Carla for introducing me to her work when we first met, years ago now. Maybe a little bit of sympathy for John. Diana's characters are imperfect in a very real sort of way.)
Just got a bunch of American Indian books from Jenn - don't know exactly where I'm going next. Already reading Great Speeches of Native Americans or Speeches of Great Native Americans or something like that. They were orators, of course, so really good at it - and you can see that in the ones people bothered to write down.

Got to get Wicked finished before my birthday trip. About 200 pages in, and wow, it seems much different than the musical, which doesn't diminish my enjoyment of either of them.
And I am just glad to be on a 6/month streak by mid February. Even with school, I feel like I haven't done all that poorly on the reading. IM is having to suffer for it some, but that's probably a good thing for me and the poor folks I blabber at online.

So I was at Confusion and I was telling the gentleman whose book keep me up late last night that the last time I'd picked up a book based solely on the cover was Kushiel's Dart. The cover art caught my admittedly-drawn-to-pretty-half-naked-women eye, and I picked it up. (I don't think I mentioned it was right next to Freedom and Necessity, which had been filed under Bull, which I went to buy and is why I saw it in the first place, funny enough).
I loved that book, and it would have taken me longer to find it if it hadn't been for the woman in a... sheet(?) on the cover.
So, no sooner am I back to work after the con than I find this book in the free book room:
Woman. Sheet. Mask. Knife. (Not very good picture, but I've still got homework to do tonight, so deal.)
I've read the first chapter of the book, and it doesn't really carry my rhythm, but it's interesting enough that I'll keep reading and eventually, I hope, catch the rhythm of the book. Then again, I'm not much of a critic - a book has to be just extremely awful for me to hate it. It's no Carey book, though. But it's got a spy, and it's a she.
The cover art suggests to me she isn't afraid to use her breasts to distract someone, but hey, it could just be misleading marketing. The copyright is from 2003, so I have to wonder if this is a reissue with a new cover?
Anyway, I saw a girl in a sheet and declared - TREND - and grabbed the book (it being in the free book room and all.)
"Yeah, I have that, the pages are bible thin, I think it might intimidate my 10 year old. Have you seen it?"
"Yup, it's big."
So it looks like I'll be buying them online somewhere, probably used. I promised her she'd have the books we got her name from for her 10th, and she'll have them, just perhaps a little late. (Although I do still have a bit over a week.)
Brust, you kept me up late because I got sucked into your book! But it was worth it, even if I'm exhausted today.

The Americanization of Benjamin Franklin by Gordon S. Wood
Critical Thinking: Tools For Taking Charge of Your Professional and Personal Life by Richard W Paul and Linda Elder
Thinking Critically About Ethical Issues by Ruggiero
Confidence Game by Michelle M Welch (and this deserves an entry all its own for a marketing trend I'm seeing that rides the wave of Carey's Kushiel books. Must rev up the camera and do that soon.)
You can tell I can't read serious material when I'm sick.

I should probably do this when I don't have a raging fever and sinus pain so bad I'd like to pull my teeth out, but... I might forget.

"The greatest gift is a passion for reading. It is cheap, it consoles, it distracts, it excites, it gives you knowledge of the world and experience of a wide kind. It is a moral illumination."
-Elizabeth Hardwick
Since I am going to be done with school in just under 6 weeks, most of the year will be available for reading. And thus begins, the book list. I am not going to assign myself goals and parameters this year. We will just read, and enjoy.
It's in USA Today. You don't need a coupon or anything for 50% off the books listed, but if you're going to spend over a certain $ amount, it'd probably be worth it for you to pick up the USA Today for the %off incremental coupon.

And since I work there and all, and just saw all the deals for the next few weekends (9 things at 50% off this weekend!) I thought I'd hook up a link to The GiftMixer.
I have no idea how the thing works, but it's cute.
Also, keep your eyes out for adds, because seriously, I wanted half the stuff on the half off list and you might too.

get too busy to keep a book list? About the time I posted the last one.
I'm in senior level classes. It's hard to make time to read. The discovery of IM, I suspect, has also hampered the effort. I like to talk too much - but making new good friends has been so much fun.
Yeah, it's that boring.
Call MK about tomorrow to set up time - find out what he wants me to wear, and Jeff, for that matter. (We're the MacBeths - isn't that nice? I always thought I could do a good Lady MacBeth. I need to...)
Get out the Wil and study up on Lady MacBeth so I can look all insane and anguished over my evil self for MK. (If all else fails, tap into Juliana.)
Oil Change.
New windshield wipers.
Plant remaining dutch irises.
Water down newly planted areas, put hay over (just admit, it won't get done later.)
Lay down newspaper and place flower box.
Try to talk Jeff into helping me build the second flower box. (Building the first with me was horrible torture for him.) Failing that - Maybe Jenn?
Figure out day for Jenn and I to do flower boxes.
Move all the garden stuff on the front porch into the garage or basement.
Calculate how much dirt the flower boxes will hold, and start pricing how much I need to save to buy said dirt next spring.
Take in hanging plants for the winter.
Set up area in basement for hanging plants to stay for winter.
Set up new lights from Kristen with other lights and start doing what I should be doing - maybe I can read in front of it every day.
Email Kristen for how much I owe her - god, I can't believe I forgot to ask on Sunday! I had the checkbook out and everything.
Order new schoolbook.
Email Jack about November game.
Help Fi with her 'spanish game.' (buy 3x5 cards)
Rinse new wineglasses and put up second glassrack.
Download syllabus for next class - start paper, even though I don't have the book.
Figure out how much money I can blow through on Friday night.
Do not make plans for next weekend. Do not make plans for next weekend.
Grocery shopping.
Get recipe from Carla for the cashew nut pasta thing.
Fix budget to reflect Jeff unpaid day off today.
RSVP for Jill's shower.
RSVP for bachelorette v.2
Email and Print off directions to Sarah's
Buy Jill a present.
put nephew's picture in frame.
clean out email and update logs.
fix Francesca links to go show soundtrack.
Find birth control stuff for Francesca and decide what she uses.
fix MT links to show James and Jim and the Deck.
Clean up LJ.
Do a nice full edit on the Juliana Day 2 stuff to make it pretty.
Write out missing Portia logs and post.
Transcribe Jenna from ACUS and send to George.
Look at last thing back from George and determine future questions.
Write up Jayne's take of the last mission. Last 2 missions. Ugh.
Someday, finish getting the Jennastasia stuff online.
Post next Seda letter.
Find the project list and once the garden stuff is done get moving on it.
Christmas card list.
Re-do address book - get new calander - change over purse.
Well, I keep this list, and it's supposed to motivate me. I haven't done a great job of tracking things lately, but here is the latest.
